RGA latest expansion to include 1994 gen

As hinted at previously, the RailGenArchive website has once again been expanded to also include coverage of the year 1994. So now the site covers the range of years 1970- 1994 and the archive contains 357316 records. Further expansion into other years to follow...

Our intention is to feature all areas of the BR network and all loco classes without bias to our own personal tastes, and where that is not the case this is entirely a reflection of the info made available to us and is NOT intentional, so if you feel that your favourite locos or local area is currently under represented then please get in touch and share your records with us. Also please let us know when you spot errors or disagree with workings shown so that we can look into it and using our skill and judgement make changes as necessary. If you have any information relating to loco hauled passenger workings over BR that we don't already feature, then please Contact Us either via email or the contact form provided on the main site, or use the box at the foot of this page. We can handle gen in any digital format, all years welcome.

Many thanks for all your help and support so far.

Site headcode search now added

Posts to this blog have been few and far between simply because the main project, The RailGenArchive website is going so well at the moment and taking up all my time. The site has been recently upgraded and the URL sightly amended to https://www.railgenarchive.co.uk making it a little bit more secure, not that that matters as you should be redirected anyway. The site's code as also been tidied up and a new data search feature, search by headcode, has also been added this week. This latest feature was added at the request of site visitors so it is worth getting in touch if you can think of any ideas to improve this site.

The RailGenArchive website currently covers the years 1970- 1993 and the archive details 353618 records of (mostly) passenger workings. Regular site updates continue not only adding to the data, but also improving the quality of that data. Expansion to cover other years is imminent, so watch this space...

If you can add any information relating to loco hauled passenger workings over BR that we don't already feature, or spot any errors, no matter how obvious, then please Contact Us either via email or the contact form provided on the main site, or use the box at the foot of this page. We can handle gen in any digital format, and all years welcome. Our intention that the RailGenArchive features all areas of the BR network and all loco classes without bias to our own personal tastes, and where that is not the case this is entirely a reflection of the info we've been supplied with and NOT intentional, so if you feel that your favourite locos or local area is currently under represented then please get in touch and share your records with us.

Many thanks for all your help and support so far.

Saturday 11th June 1988

The RailGenArchive website currently covers the years 1970- 1993 and the archive contains 342328 records. Regular site updates continue and expansion into other years to follow...

On any given day, with an operation as complex as a busy railway network, 'operational difficulties' are bound to happen from time to time. Here follows details of just a few from a far off summer Saturday some thirty years ago, as seen by enthusiasts out and about and pieced together by the RailGenArchive group.

1. 37426 worked 1M06 0507 Cardiff Central-Liverpool Lime Street but failed upon arrival. 31221 was unusual choice as replacement, worked 1V08 0915 Liverpool Lime Street-Cardiff Central, arrived 10 late Cardiff. 47432 then provided to work 1M17 1323 Cardiff Central-Liverpool Lime Street. 37426 was revived to work 1V17 1714 Liverpool Lime Street-Cardiff Central but fails Runcorn, requiring assistance from 47119 forward to Crewe where 37703 was provided to go forwards. 37426 engine damage sufficient to require Doncaster works attention, arriving there 3 days later (14th) not release until 9th September 1988.

2. 47441 was a partial failure, Wellington area, working 1J19 0740 London Euston-Pwllheli with 37079+37197 booked to go forward, but were now to assist, but instead came to some minor grief on the Shrewsbury point work. 47441, now revived by driver and able to continue, but was then held up outside Shrewsbury while 37079+37197 were untangled from point work. Result was, 37079+37197 leave Shrewsbury on 1J19 over a hour late. 1J19 booked to cross 1A44 1010 Aberystwyth-London Euston, behind 37681+37686 at Newtown, but crossed at Welshpool instead, single line results in 1A44 also now 30+ late. Also explains why I didn't take (dud) pair to Welshpool as usual, but instead play safe, waiting for the score in the Buxton stone pair at Shrewsbury?

3. There was a loco failure at Sheffield prior to departure of SO 1O05 0608 Sheffield-Poole with 47475 the alleged culprit. 45110 was acquired as replacement, 1O05 departure Sheffield, 66 late. 1O05 booked fresh loco, forward from New St, but appears non available. 45110 runs around, continues to Didcot (NOT Reading as stated elsewhere) though not even booked to call there, 47612 then works forward avoiding Reading as booked. 45110 returned North, Light engine, to Saltley, departing Didcot shortly after 1500 hrs. Further issues between Birmingham & the south coast are known to have occurred that afternoon, but as yet, details are unclear. 1E35 1241 Poole - Leeds was late as you would expect, with late arrival of inbound 1O05, but so was preceding 1M56 1142 Poole - Manchester, arrived Leamington with 47525, not the expected 47478, which I'm reliably informed, was by then, dumped at Reading... 47525 had worked 1O10 0847 Leeds - Poole off Birmingham, booked through engine, so not clear how, or from where, it ended up on a late running 1M56?

Visit the RailGenArchive and enter the date 11-06-1988 in the box provided to see all workings currently notified to us. Other dates are available...

1993

On the UK railways, 1993 saw a gradual reduction of freight traffic and loss of motive power variety right across the network with the sectors insuring only small batches of locos working small batches of services. One high spot was the start of the long rumoured diagramming of Class 37s to the North Wales coast passenger turns and that summer was also the one and only time those locos had a booked passenger turn through my local area.

The RailGenArchive website has once again been expanded to also include coverage of the year 1993. So now the site covers the range of years 1970- 1993 and the archive contains 339338 records. Further expansion into other years to follow...

More Info Required

With the RailGenArchive website, as with the 1980s Timewarp site before it, you never know just what new gen the next email will bring, thus the recent expansion of the site further back in time to feature 1970. As this is a little bit before my time, I have a few questions arising which I was hopeful someone out there might be able to help with.

1. 1970 Loco changes. Does anyone have any reliable records or even official paperwork showing just where loco changes were booked to take place during that year?

2. On Sunday 30th August 1970 Class 37 6937 is reported leaving Edinburgh Waverley at 0845 with a passenger working, but what was the destination?

3. Moving forwards in time, but only to Saturday 10th May 1975, where an unknown Class 50 passed Par at 1830 on what was believed to be 1Z15, a return excursion formed of air con mkIID stock. Any ideas as to what this service or the unknown loco was?

If you can help with any of the above, please Contact Us and help us continue to grow the RailGenArchive website. Many thanks for all your help and support so far.

Tales of the unexpected.

The next expansion of the RailGenArchive website was expected to be forwards into 1993, but various turns of events and the unexpected arrival in the last week of quality gen from 1970, featuring passenger workings by locos such as Class 22's and Warships amongst others as brought about a change of plan. Most of the workings received are from January, February & July with a few others spread across that year. So now the site covers the range of years 1970- 1992 . Further expansion into 1993 to follow, but as for quite when, time alone will tell...

In the present day, in my local area anyway, the once prolific rail freight traffic as all but disappeared while the passenger service is the most intensive its ever been. Just a pity, then, that all of that passenger traffic is pretty coloured plastic units with the only variation from the booked power when a service gets cancelled. But if you keep an eye out, there are a few one off or occasional workings worth a look. As an example, four days this last week, 6Z16, a Leicester - Leicester circuit appeared. I only knew it was running because I'd seen it on Real Time Trains and without checking with such sites, I don't think I'd see anything much at all any more. All such sites don't tell you is what the power will be, for that you need a phone or word of mouth. What was 6Z16? What about 50007 top & tail with 50008 most definitely a recent unexpected highlight along with this weeks other more predictable appearance of 37606+20303+30302 en-route to this weekends Gresty Bridge event. The Class 20s were even idling, so nice to hear that sound again.

At the time of this posting the RailGenArchive database contains 327617 records, and while increasing in quantity, the quality of that gen also continues to be improved. Our intention is to feature all areas of the BR network and all loco classes, so if you feel that your favourite locos or local area is currently under represented then please get in touch and share your records with us. If you have any information relating to loco hauled passenger workings over BR that we don't already feature, then please Contact Us either via email or the contact form provided on the main site, or use the box at the foot of this page. We can handle gen in any digital format, all years welcome. All loco classes feature and data filters on the site allow you to just look at the gen that interests you.

Info Required

The RailGenArchive can only continue to grow with your help. Any additional info, missing details etc that you can pass on to us is always gratefully received for future site updated. At the time of this posting the RailGenArchive database covers the years 1971- 1990 and contains 315424 records.

Recently rediscovered, misplaced within the old Timewarp site archives, a sizeable data contribution of detailed sighting logs made on many summer Saturdays during the summer of 1975 at the key railway location of Reading. However, not having a 1975 working timetable for this area, we are missing the time of departure for each service. So, if you are able to accurately fill in the missing departure time, shown as xxxx in the table below, this will assist us greatly.

Two Easter eggs from the RGA team

The RailGenArchive as again been expanded, by going even further back in time to include 1971 & 1972 and so the main site now covers the years 1971- 1990 . The further back in time we try to go, the less likely it appears that we'll receive gen in any quantity so future expansion looks to be into the 1990's, we are already working on 1991 so watch this space...

At the time of this posting the RailGenArchive database contains 312389 records. Not only does the amount of gen on the site continue to grow, the quality of that gen is also constantly worked on with regular site updates every few days. If you have any gen relating to loco hauled passenger workings over BR that we could use, Contact Us either via email or the contact form provided, or use the box at the foot of this page. RGA latest

Very rarely does a day go by without me doing some work on The RailGenArchive. The mailbox is checked and data processed and prepared for the site whenever I can fit it in around day to day life. I do as much work as I can off-line because with the site being generated from the contents of a database I can then import the data every few days or so once I can be sure I'll get a hour or two of uninterrupted net access. The other team members do their bit as and when too, this is not a solo project remember. I'll update this blog from time to time with news of progress and impending developments just in case anyone is interested.

The RailGenArchive currently covers the years 1973- 1990 with further expansion of years covered to come. Gen for the newly added years is a little thin at present, but with your help it can grow quickly. All loco classes feature and data filters allow you to look for the gen that interests you. At the time of this posting the RailGenArchive database contains 310279 records. Not only as the amount of gen on the site increased, but the quality of that gen as been improved with many little details added, especially missing headcodes. If you have any gen relating to loco hauled passenger workings for the site, Contact Us either via email or the contact for provided, or use the box at the foot of this page.

Many thanks for all your help and support so far. The RailGenArchive team.

RGA - 2 more years added.

The RailGenArchive as grown once again to cover two extra years. Now we go back even further to include 1973 & 1974. Gen is a little thin at present, but with your help it can grow quickly. New data filters for long extinct classes have also been added. If you have any gen relating to loco hauled passenger workings for the site, Contact Us either via email or the contact for provided, or use the box at the foot of this page.

Over recent weeks the site as continued to grow and, at the time of this posting the RailGenArchive database contains 306313 records.

Coming soon, as always, more gen updates, and further expansion of the years covered by the RailGenArchive... news of further site expansion and other developments will be posted here.

RGA loco search upgrade

"Much more regular posts will follow..."

The RailGenArchive now features a new and much improved loco search option.

The old search just looked for the number and listed workings by a loco with that number. Trouble is, some numbers were carried by more than one loco (although normally more than a single loco had the number at any one time) and in such instances you'd get an inaccurate listing. Also, where a loco carried more than one number during the years covered, you'd need to search for each number separately.

Now when you enter a loco number, workings by that loco under all numbers that it carried, from pre-TOPS onward, are listed. Where a number was carried by more than one loco at different times, you'll be given a choice between lists of all numbers carried by each engine.

Coming soon, further expansion of the years covered by the RailGenArchive... as well as continuing gen updates...

Many thanks for all your help and support so far. The RailGenArchive team.

Friday 5 January 2018

Now with added 1990.

"More regular posts to follow."

As promised last time, The RailGenArchive as now expanded it's coverage to include 1990. Further expansion of coverage to include other years will follow shortly.

As well as the ongoing site updates, work to the loco search code is progressing well. We intend listings for each loco to include gen under each number that that particular loco carried. This will prove useful once we start adding gen from the years before 1975 when services carried headcodes and locos had pre-TOPS numbers. We need to gather and archive this old gen together before it gets lost forever?

With your help, we will continue to grow the site. Please get in touch via the RailGenArchive contacts form or the contact form on this page with any additional gen or corrections to what we have already.

Many thanks for all your help and support so far. The RailGenArchive team.
